Iron And Limonite

LIMONITE (Hydrated Iron Oxide) - Amethyst Galleries

Limonite forms mostly in or near oxidized iron and other metal ore deposits, and as sedimentary beds. Limonite has been known to pseudomorph other minerals such as pyrite , meaning it replaces a crystal of pyrite with limonite but keeps the shape of the pyrite crystal.

Limonite: The mineral Limonite information and pictures

Limonite in a ore of iron and is used as a pigment in the manufacture of paints. Besides for a few aesthetic lustrous botryoidal forms of Limonite, as well as the interesting pseudomorphs, Limonite is not of much interest to collectors.

Limonite: Mineral information, data and localities.

Currently used for unidentified massive hydroxides and oxides of iron, with no visible crystals, and a yellow-brown streak. Limonite is most commonly the mineral species goethite, but can also consist of varying proportions of lepidocrocite, hisingerite, pitticite, jarosite group species, maghemite, hematite, etc.

Limonite - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

A number of naturally occurring minerals contain iron and some are rich enough in iron to be classed as ores. In North America, these are the oxides magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 , 72.4% iron), hematite (Fe 2 O 3 , 70.0% iron), and limonite , a hydrated iron oxide (2Fe 2 O 3 ·3H 2 O, 59.8 % iron).

Hot Rocks - Meteorite Identification

LIMONITE Together with hematite, it has been mined as ore for the production of iron. Limonite is heavy and normally yellowish-brown but can be darker when mixed with iron ore. It is a very common amorphous substance though can be tricky to find when mined with hematite and bog ore. Bog Iron Specimen below was found near Rocky Mountain, N.C. in 1935.

Limonite Mineral Information, photos and Facts

Limonite is a common ore of iron and is always secondary in its origin, formed through the alteration or solution of previously existing iron minerals. Pyrite is often found altered to limonite, the crystal form being at times preserved, giving limonite pseudomorphs.

Goethite: The mineral goethite information and pictures

Goethite is a common mineral, and is a frequent matrix material for other more aesthetic minerals. It is usually a dark, uninteresting mineral, though specimens from a handful of locations (especially Colorado) are remarkable for their delicate and beautiful crystal growths and velvety botryoidal growths. Goethite is also frequent as black crystal sprays that form within geodes on drusy Quartz.

Goethite | mineral | Britannica

Goethite, a widespread iron oxide mineral [α-FeO(OH)] and the most common ingredient of iron rust. It was named in 1806 for J.W. von Goethe, a German poet and philosopher with a keen interest in minerals. The name was originally applied to lepidocrocite [γ-FeO(OH)], a less common mineral with the s

iron-oxide concretions and nodules

Concretions and nodules, which may also be composed in part of the iron oxy-hydroxides, limonite and goethite, come in a wide variety of bizarre shapes. Sometimes theyre shiny on the surface, which might give the impression of a meteorite fusion crust .

Limonite

Limonite is an ore of iron, and it causes coloration in soil. The widespread and common hydrated iron oxide mineral limonite is a minor ore of iron and a source of ocher and umber pigments.

Iron-rich sedimentary rocks - Wikipedia

Some examples of minerals in iron-rich rocks containing oxides are limonite, hematite, and magnetite. An example of a mineral in iron-rich rock containing carbonates is siderite and an example of minerals in an iron-rich rock containing silicate is chamosite.
